Lenovo IdeaPad Y480: Full Review of the first Ivy Bridge laptop from Lenovo – Part 1
Tuesday, May 15th, 2012 5:36:28 by Usman KhalidLenovo released the new Y-Series model with the latest Intel Core i-Series processor called the Lenovo IdeaPad Y480. This is the new mid-size notebook from the PC-makers with some of the high tech features that are ample to replace a desktop for general to high-end computing.
The new IdeaPad gets the dedicated attention from Lenovo and this new iteration in the Y-Series line is the best in the bunch with the latest and greatest processor and dedicated GPU from NVIDIA. The price however, is on the fringe of affordable bracket at $999 for the base model and $1199 with full options.
Along with the pros, there are some downsides to the new notebook. The resolution is deliberately kept low, which is a turn off, considering the presence of a high-end graphics card inside the chassis. Moreover, the USB/eSATA port is missing in the equation.
Design and Hardware
The new IdeaPad Y480 gives the look of a typical mid-sized notebook that are not so thin and not so bulgy at the same time. Lenovo’s sweet child has always been the ThinkPad that we generally see in the hands of the masses. However, IdeaPad is not for the masses, it is for a targeted audience and the new device is no exception.
Instead of a matte black ThinkPad, the new IdeaPad comes with a rather attractive and simple black brushed-metal cover, which tends to blend into every surrounding. This is a plus for a laptop that is not built for show-off or general computing but for some serious work at office or at home.
The keypad is a typical Lenovo island-styled design with round-edged keys at the bottom for easy accessibility. However, the keyboard is not back lit which is not a news in a mid-sized laptop.
The track-pad is larger and quite sensitive but does not match the quality of a Macbook Pro or Air, both in sensitivity and multi-gestures.
The dimensions are 13.6×9.4 inches, and 1.3 inches in height. It weigh 4.5 pounds.
