Lenovo IdeaPad Y480: Full Review of the first Ivy Bridge laptop from Lenovo – Part 2
Tuesday, May 15th, 2012 5:36:17 by Usman KhalidFrom base to high-end model ,every Y480 comes equipped with the same Intel Core i7-3610QM clocked at 2.3 GHz. The new third generation Ivy Bridge processor is supported by 8 GB worth of 1,600MHz DDR3 RAM. Both work hand-in-hand to churn out ample power to beat even the high-end laptops from last year to the punch.
One of the major attraction in the new Y480 is its dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M. However, Intel’s own integrated HD4000 graphics card is also included for general computing and low- to mid-level gaming. For intensive games the GeForce kicks in to show-off its power.
However, the general perception would be that with such intensive graphics processor, the company would incorporate killer resolution but instead Lenovo killed the vibe altogether with comparatively low-res screen at 1,366×768 pixels in a 14-inch (diagonal) real estate. The poor thing cannot even play 1080p HD videos despite having a fastidious GPU. For a 14-inch laptop, the specs are great and results it showed were promising but the screen res is a complete turn-off. The JBL-branded speakers were above average, however, and a good choice for a smaller system.
Moreover, the USB/eSATA port found in most of the IdeaPad device is missing in Y480 but the company has nestled two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports to make it up to miss.
The new laptop comes pre-installed with Windows 7 Home Premium but is upgradable to the upcoming Windows 8 from Microsoft.
Y480’s price ranges from $999 to $1199 but the variants only offer choices in storage capacity and Blu-Ray options.
Performance
In terms of performance the new notebook churns out enough power to beat all the devices with last year’s second generation processors from Intel, and is in the middle among the devices with the new Ivy Bridge processors.
