Michael Schumacher slapped with five-place grid penalty for Monaco Grand Prix
Tuesday, May 15th, 2012 6:27:58 by Kashif KhanMichael Schumacher has been imposed with a five-place grid penalty at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Schumacher will be serving this penalty due to the collision he had with Williams’ driver Bruno Senna during the Spanish Grand Prix.
Schumacher was in his 12th lap when he saw Senna ahead of him and was looking to overtake his car but Senna applied his brakes slightly earlier than Schumacher anticipated and crashed into Senna’s car. Both cars ran into the gravel and the Mercedes car retired straight away while Senna retired a bit later in the same lap.
Schumacher did not feel that it was his fault and was caught on radio calling Senna an “idiot”. Senna however did said that he did not want to comment on the issue and added that he knew who was at fault.
“He [Senna] moved to the right, but he shouldn’t move back in the braking phase to the left that sharply. I’m just behind him and I don’t know how sharply he is going to move. So it was all very dangerous,” Schumacher said.
“We had a chance of good points today so it is doubly frustrating. I have to say I don’t know what he was trying to prove but in Brazil last year he was driving into my car and today he was doing funny things. A lap before he had an accident together with Grosjean so I don’t know what he was going through his mind,” he added.
Jaime Alguersuari commentating for BBC radio for the season during the race when the accident happened said right away that it was hundred percent Schumacher’s fault.
After the stewards had reviewed the incident they decided to penalise Schumacher. The FIA statement read, “The driver of Car 7 Michael Schumacher collided with Car 19 Bruno Senna at Turn One and forced him to retire from the event.”
This penalty will hurt Schumacher in an already disappointing season so far for the veteran German driver. Yet the season has been the way that it still has no clear winner and open for drivers to claim the highest accolade.
