NA Speaker says Supreme Court has right to interpret constitution
Tuesday, May 15th, 2012 9:50:31 by Faisal FarooqSpeaker National Assembly (NA) Fehmida Mirza has said that the Supreme Court had the right to interpret the constitution, adding that Prime Minister Gilani should not have said that he would only listen to the speaker.
Speaking to a Private TV channel, she said that PM did not mean that he would not adhere to Supreme Court’s verdict, and would rather favor the Parliament’s verdict.
She deliberated that Constitution was always written by parliament who was representative of masses, and according to rules had the respect and command over any institution.
She advocated prudence and tolerance on behalf of the august office of Speaker, who should review each issue impartially and cool headedly.
“When the issue was referred to me, I ruled in favor of Parliament’s supremacy, and despite the fact that the Supreme Court had the authority to interpret Constitution, Parliament also had its due role , as it’s debate over the issue is also considered”, she stated.
She expressed her deep regrets that as an emotional Nation, Pakistanis have never learned their lessons from past mistakes.
She said that during past four years, the Parliament proved to be at its best, by legislating over such important issues like 18th, 19th and 20th amendments, among many others.
“We faced morbidities of terrorism, ruined economy and other sever cases, as all institution were sliding downhill, while they are currently on their way to recovery”, she expressed.
Answering a question regarding drone attacks, she regretted the way the youth were being guided towards the facts about these drone attacks; “better we also take into account, as to who initiated the deal of drone attacks” she said, adding that government did not have a magic wand to stop drone attacks, forthwith.
She also said that government did its best in blocking NATO supply route and closing down airbase facilities, reasoning that Pakistan couldn’t obviously engage a power above itself in war.
“I contrive (d) to utilize the best of my abilities to run the Parliament”, she defended. She said that a permission to pass a resolution in PM’s favor was granted in National Assembly, since a Speaker had to consider the majority of the House.
“The Opposition leader is a senior, respectful member of the House, and he should have talked directly me instead of resorting to media,” she said.
