NATO Supply resumption; Pakistan to charge $ 1800/ truck from NATO

Islamabad: (Wednesday, May 16, 2012) According to the news, Pakistan is mulling over charging NATO $ 1800/ truck if it allows the supply line, which is suspended for about six months, to resume again. With these charges, the US-led
war in Afghanistan will become costlier by $ 365 million annually.

If the deal is stricken, which is most likely to happen, Pakistan will allow vital supplies like food items and other necessary equipment to pass from Pakistani ports to land-locked Afghanistan.

According to the sources, the pay out for each truck passing Pakistan’s boundaries and heading towards Afghanistan will be a still-to-be-fixed fee of $ 1500 to $ 1800. The officials are of the view that with putting this price
tag on the passing trucks, Pakistan will be able to earn $ 1 million a day. Sharing the details, the officials requested anonymity as they were not allowed to reveal the details of the agreement.

However, this money will not come without a cost as for charging on each truck, Pakistan will have to provide security to them. Moreover, the US is also asking for much speedier clearance of customs and checkpoints.

The NATO traffic in and out Afghanistan through Pakistan is estimated to be around 600 trucks a day. And this momentum is expected to continue at least until next year.

In a major development, getting the hint that the US will not apologize at any point over the Salala incident, Pakistan thought of softening its otherwise hard line over the issue. Moreover, the Americans have not agreed to end
the controversial strikes through drones that have been killing innocent Pakistanis in the tribal areas.
