Jerusalem: The US ambassador to Israel said today that the plans for a military strike on Iran were ready and the option to do so was fully available.
A few days ago, stepping down from its earlier stance, Tehran had expressed its willingness to talk to the world powers that suspect the country of developing nuclear arms.
Expressing an opinion somewhat similar to that of Israel, the US has said that it consider the use of military force as a last resort to prevent Iran from using its uranium enrichment to make atomic bomb. Iran, on the other hand,
insists that its plan is purely for civilian purposes.
Stating that solving the issue diplomatically was a preferable option, ambassador Dan Shapiro said on Israel’s Army Radio today, “It would be preferable to resolve this diplomatically and through the use of pressure than to use
military force.”
“But that doesn’t mean that option is not fully available – not just available, but it’s ready. The necessary planning has been done to ensure that it’s ready.” Shapiro added further.
The United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany have been using sanctions and negotiations to try to persuade Iran to curb its uranium enrichment, which can produce fuel for reactors, medical isotopes, and, at higher
levels of purification, fissile material for warheads.
New sessions for talks opened last month in Istanbul, and now they will resume on May 23 in Baghdad.
Israel, which is perceived to be the only country in Middle East armed with atomic arsenal, feels threatened by the prospect of its arch-rival Iran attaining the nuclear technology. And thus, it has also hinted towards launching
a preemptive war.
However, many defence analysts do not buy the idea of Israel having enough power to bring Iran on its knees. However, while using US military clout, the situation can turn well against Iran and may bring lasting damage to the country’s
nuclear program.
Earlier, back in January, Shapiro told an Israeli newspaper that the US was “guaranteeing that the military option is ready and available to the president at the moment he decides to use it”.
The Unites States lawmakers are presently mulling over doing additional legislation that may increase pressure on Iran, with further measures to punish the foreign companies for dealing with Iran in any capacity.
