Lamont Peterson says he is still the champ
Thursday, May 17th, 2012 12:57:04 by Imran Shaukat KhanLamont Peterson defeated Amir Khan last year in December as a result to which he currently holds the WBA (Super) and IBF Light Welterweight titles but his titles are likely to be revoked as he has failed to VADA drugs test back in March.
Khan and Peterson were both set for a rematch but there bout was called off when the American tested positive for synthetic testosterone. The Brit therefore wants Peterson to surrender all of his titles but Peterson has rejected all calls from Khan since he is hoping that a hearing will prove him innocent.
“Let the commission decide, let the sanctioning bodies decide,” he said. “Until that point I’m still the champ.”
Peterson, who holds a record winning 30 of his 32 professional fights (1 no contest), with 15 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, insisted that he has never cheated in his life and he doesn’t like cheats at all.
“If the procedure I done is what gave me the dirty urine, then what else can i say? I made a mistake.,” said Peterson. “That’s all I can say. apologise for it and try and move on with my career.
“But I think it’s wrong for anyone to call me a cheat.”
“I’ve never been a cheat. I don’t like it when people cheat,” added Peterson. “It’s just my word but the pellets didn’t do anything to help me beat him.”
“I’m someone who’s never cheated in his life about anything. I just don’t feel like a winner if I cheated.
“Boxing is already a rough sport. We don’t need to make it rougher by someone taking a drug to make themselves that much better, and putting someone’s health at risk.”
Well, all said and done, Peterson is focusing on the Nevada hearing at this point in time and he intends to apply for a license to box because he knows the outcome will determine his immediate and possible long-term future in boxing.
