Islamabad: (Thursday, May 17, 2012) Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, while addressing the event organized to mark the world Telecommunication and Information society day, said that Pakistan’s information technology
sector is considered as country best performing economic sector.
He said, “Pakistan’s telecommunication and information technology sectors are considered as our best economic success story, in spite of the severe economic challenges currently faced by our country.”
Counting the economic dividends that the sector’s rapid growth has brought, and the role it has played in creating more jobs for the people, the PM said, “Telecommunications and IT are bringing encouraging economic dividends and
inspiring lifestyle choices for the people of Pakistan. In turn, the Democratic Government is endeavoring to open more possibilities and opportunities in these sectors for growth by bringing the much-awaited 3G technology to Pakistan. I directed the Minister
for Information Technology to expedite the process. The government is confident that together with this sustained and active interest, investment and support of telecom and IT companies, we can put Pakistan on the fast-track of economic prosperity and technological
excellence.”
However, he was considerate to the fact the economic gains were of no use unless they trickle down and reach to the poor of Pakistan. He said, “We need to ensure that the dividends of any economic and technological progress trickle
down to the people of Pakistan, particularly to the vulnerable and disadvantaged groups such as women and girls. In a globalized world, women and girls play a key role in reducing poverty, fostering economic development and promoting social cohesion for themselves,
their families and their countries.”
