Karachi: (Friday, May 18, 2012) The Sindh High Court, while taking notice of unnecessary delay in the local body polls, ordered the Sindh government today to hold the elections within 90 days.
The local elections have not been held since the last local government tenure was ended in 2009.
Earlier, remarking on the issue during a hearing in Balochistan, Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said that powers to hold local bodies elections have now shifted to the provinces under the 18th
Constitutional amendment, however, they have not fulfilled their constitutional obligation.
The chief justice had also directed all the chief secretaries to submit detail reports on why the delay took place.
Defending their position, the officials had argued that the delay in verification of electoral rolls and delimitation of constituencies as main factors responsible for the delay. It was decided that Advocate-General Sindh Fatah
Malik would represent the province.
Taking the local government system, there had been a deadlock between Sindh’s coallation government partners, namely, the Pakistan Peoples ‘Party and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). Although they both are preparing drafts of the
local government but there is little agreement that has prevailed so far.
