Global mobile phone sales down 2 percent in Q1 2012 compared to same year-earlier quarter
Friday, May 18th, 2012 5:45:04 by Usman KhalidMobile sales have declined over the course of one year in the worldwide market and the major decline was in the Asian market. A recent survey report from Gartner reveals the sales and shipment results in the first quarter of 2012 of the top ten major mobile phone vendors in the world. There was a decrease of 2% in sales, according to Gartner.
The major decline in sales was seen in the Asia/Pacific market where vendors failed to release their new handset in first quarter of the year, which is considered to be strongest sales period of the year in Asia.
This is the first time since Q2 of 2009 that the same period of the following year showed decline in sales. The total number of units sold last year was 427,845,700; this year the figures were down to 419,108,300 units.
“Global sales of mobile devices declined more than expected due to a slowdown in demand from the Asia/Pacific region,” Gartner analyst Anshul Gupta said in a statement. “The first quarter, traditionally the strongest quarter for Asia – which is driven by Chinese New Year, saw a lack of new product launches from leading manufacturers, and users delayed upgrades in the hope of better smartphone deals arriving later in the year.”
The Q1 results were staggering as the result of the year depends on sales figures from the starting quarter. In addition to a decrease in the overall sales of mobile phones, there were upsets in positions on the table. Samsung surpassed Nokia in shipments in Q1. The Korean company is the first to jump to the first position replacing the Finnish vendor for the first time in a long time.
Samsung shipped 86,567,600 units grabbing 20.7 percent of the market. The company’s sales last year were 68,782,000 units. Nokia rolled out 83,162,500 units this quarter with a market share of 19.1 percent. It showed a massive decline compared to 107,556,100 units from last year.
At third place is Apple with 33,162,500 units gouging 7.9 percent of the market. Following the iPhone makers are ZTE, LG and Huawei Device at 4th, 5th and 6th positions with 4.2, 3.5 and 2.6 percent market shares respectively.
