Hussain Haqqani refused to return to Pakistan

Former Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States, Hussain Haqqani refused to return home, saying that such a scenario was not possible until the atmosphere cooled for him.

While interviewing to CNN he stated, “I will not go back to Pakistan for the moment. Purely because there are elements there who have been threatening my life”.

Quoting the killing of former Governor Punjab Salmaan Taseer at the hands of his own guard, he said it was better for him to stay until such time as the ideologically motivational hateful rhetoric against him is ended.

The former envoy pointed out that whatever advantages and benefits Pakistan gains from NATO supplies, it will not last forever, hammering out terms for resuming the supply-line for allied forces battling in Afghanistan.

He observed, “Pakistanis have to wake up to the fact that whatever advantages they have as the ground line of communication (GLOCs) provider, that advantage is not going to last forever”.

In his view, Pakistan needs to crack down on these extremists for the country’s sake, as more Pakistanis have been killed by them then they have killed foreigners. Pakistan will be haunted by the remnants after withdrawal of the NATO forces from Afghanistan, he added.

Haqqani was of the opinion that key point remained a gap of trust deficit between the two states and a reduced space within Pakistan to openly discuss pragmatic aspects of the troubled bilateral ties.

He asserted, “We just want to blame our neighbors, our enemies. But we don’t want to take account of what’s wrong at home”.

The former ambassador chose an interesting analogy saying they do not want India to create a kind of presence in Afghanistan that the America would not have tolerated if the Soviets created it in Mexico in the Cold War.

Proposing honesty as the only solution of all the problems, he said Pakistan needs to discuss its relations with the US honestly and openly within its society, instead of allowing a small group of people ideologically motivated and seeking essentially the domination of an Islamist ideology within Pakistan, but unable to get votes.

In his view, nothing comes out of it when domestic politics of the US and Pakistan often come in the form of clash.
