Missing Persons case in Balochistan: Deputy AG resigns

Quetta: (Tuesday, May 22, 2012) Unable to satisfy the apex court’s bench hearing the missing persons case in Quetta, the deputy Attorney General of Balochistan, Malik Sikander, has resigned from his position.

Commenting on his decision to first walkout of the court and later on submitting his resignation, the deputy AG said, “I have the right to live my life with respect. This is why I am resigning and appearing in court as a common
lawyer.”

Today, as the court resumed hearing on the missing persons case, the chief justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry inquired about the absence of the secretary defence, interior secretary and the prime minister’s principal
secretary who had been summoned by the court earlier. The CJ asked the deputy AG whether they had been presented with the court’s orders or not.

Deputy AG Sikander replied that he had not received a copy of the court’s orders. Dissatisfied with the answer, the Chief Justice ordered him to give a written statement to the court, stating that he was unable to satisfy the court’s
orders.

The deputy AG requested the court to give him some time, at least a day but the court refused. Unable to satisfy the court, he walked out saying he would return in five minutes as ‘Advocate’ instead of ‘Deputy AG’ Malik Sikander.

The court, however, did not comment on his behavior. Of those the court summoned yesterday, only governor of Balochistan’s principal secretary appeared before the court.
