Law and order situation in Balochistan: CJ lashes out at the PM and minister for interior

Quetta: (Wednesday, May 23, 2012) Resuming with the hearing on missing persons’ case in Balochistan, the Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry expressed discontent over the cold responses of the PM and the provincial
minister for interior.

While in dialogue with Khushnood Lashari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s principal secretary, the CJ remarked that if the PM does not want to implement the apex court’s orders, it could mull over utilizing other options available
in the constitution that also included imposing ‘emergency’.

Irked by the absence of the interior minister for Balochistan, Mir Nasirullah Zehri, the CJ ordered the secretary for interior to register a case against him. He also said that if Zehri did not appear before the court, then he
should be arrested and brought before the apex court.

Justice Chaudhry made these comments while expressing his dissatisfaction with the law and order situation in the Balochistan.

The government officials that appeared before the apex court’s bench in Quetta included Defence Secretary Nargis Sethi, prime minister’s principal secretary Khushnood Lashari, DIG Balochistan, IG Police, Chief Secretary Balochistan
and the secretary interior.

The Supreme Court’s bench expressed its resentment over the behavior of those who continue to defy the court’s orders.

Earlier, Gilani directed his principal secretary and secretary for cabinet to appear before the apex court in Quetta. He gave the directive while chairing a cabinet meeting. A statement issued by the PM house in this regards stated,
“It clearly manifests how much the government holds the Supreme Court in high esteem”.
