House of Marley’s Bag of Rhythms: A portable music box with classical looks
Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012 6:15:36 by Usman KhalidPortable sound systems are trending these days. iPod and iPhone docks have been in the market for years but the new trend of having the whole jukebox on the go is becoming a fashion of late. There are many companies like Dr. Dre’s Beats Audio is heavily involved in the this nascent market. Now House of Marley has introduced a new boom box called House of Marley Bag of Rhythms.
Yes, that’s right, Bag of Rhythms, and not only metaphorically speaking but literally it is a bag of speakers in a unibody structure. The boom box is made of eco-friendly recycled plastic wrapped in a canvas bag giving it a more classical look.
The Bag of Rhythms consists of twin 1-inch tweeters and 4.5-inch woofers in a ported enclosure. The enclosure is made of recyclable plastic and has an iPod/iPhone dock right in the middle. The overall structure is covered with a removable canvas carrying bag that has appropriate holes for the speakers and subwoofer bass exhaust ducts.
The whole thing can be carried on the shoulder as the bag has a shoulder strap integrated. Moreover, the jukebox can also be toted in hands like a briefcase with the fabric handles on either landscape side.
The iPod/iPhone dock in the middle has an Apple connector to connect the said devices to the music box. Volume Up/Down and power buttons can be located on the top of the docking slot. The downside is that the connectivity has been limited to on Apple devices. There is an AUX port at the bottom to connect smartphones and other MP3 player or multimedia devices to the box, that have a 3.5mm headphones jack. However, there is no Bluetooth or other wireless connectivity options in the device.
iPhone/iPod attached, the Bag of Rhythms carries a massive 10 pounds but the shoulder strap provided makes it easy to carry the load on shoulders. The device does not have a rechargeable source of power for mobile use. Six D size batteries have to be nestled in the device to use it on the go where wall-mount power outlets are not available. However, the company said that the rechargeable batteries are in the making and soon the device will be updated with it.
At present, the device is priced at $349, which is costly when compared to other options in the market like Monster Beats from Dr. Dre’s labs, that cost $320 but have Bluetooth and rechargeable batteries.
