Sharp LC-LE745U: The 2012 LED HD 3D TV – Part 2

The remote is a traditional looking peripheral that has a number of buttons, making the miniature ones even more cramp. On the brighter side, there are three dedicated buttons for favourite apps. Program three of your favourite applications like YouTube, Hulu or Vudu to the buttons and pressing them will take you directly inside the app.

The television connects to the internet seamlessly and streaming videos is without any clipping. There are no mentionable stutters while streaming videos. However, the set does not boast any audio streaming except Pandora.

The TV includes a web browser with support to all the web contents. However, like almost every other television browser, it is slow and poorly synced to the web content, orientation is faulty and pages load in years.

The picture quality that matters the most is poor. The television cannot handle 2D images in a better manner and Sharp has included 3D, without even giving any 3D glasses with it.

There is a blue tint over the images and the colour quality is poor. The TV reads and assigns incorrect colours to the scenes. The quality of blacks is disappointing. They should have been deeper but actually they are not. The dimming is even worse. Mind you, all Sharp 2012 iterations of television are LED edge lit, and not through-and-through full-array like most of the sets in the market these days.

745U is a mediocre 3D performer. In the crucial area of crosstalk only the ST50 performed worse in our lineup, although the Sony HX750 was about the same. The 745U showed an obvious ghostly outline around many objects in a movie test.

Conclusion

The new 745U is a mediocre performer in the market and given the price of the device, it is even less attractive. In many ways, and I repeat, in many ways, the 640U is a better player at this. Though it does not have 3D, which most you wouldn’t mind, it delivers a better picture quality to the viewers and still remains in a good price bracket.
