PM Contempt case: Govt. to decide on lodging appeal tomorrow

Islamabad: (Saturday, May 26, 2012) Federal Minister for Information, Qamar Zaman Kaira said yesterday that an appeal against the Supreme Court’s decision in the PM contempt case has been prepared, however, final decision on filing
it in the apex court is yet to be taken.

Talking to the media personnel here in Islamabad, Kaira noted that the appeal has highlighted about 147 objections; however, he said that there is a difference of opinion among the party members on whether a plea should be filed
at all. He maintained that a final decision will be taken today (Saturday).

Today is the last day for Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to file an appeal against the Supreme Court’s verdict. Earlier, finding him guilty of contempt of court on April 24, 2012, for refusing to write a letter to the Swiss
authorities in order to reopen corruption cases against the president, the court had sentenced the PM for few seconds.

On Thursday, just two days before the expiry of a 30-day deadline to decide on the fate of Gilani, the National Assembly speaker, Dr Fehmida Mirza had dismissed bids to disqualify the PM.
