Islamabad: (Monday, May 28, 2012) The chief of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency has postponed his visit to the US amid the “pressing commitments” confirmed a military spokesman today.
The postponements of the ISI chief’s visit is mainly attributed to the renewed tensions between the US and Pakistan over the later’s six month blockage on NATO supplies in Afghanistan and last week’s sentencing of Dr Shakil Afridi
– the main character that helped the CIA in finding Osama bin Laden.
Informing journalists through a short text message, the spokesman said that ISI’s director general, Lieutenant General Zaheerul Islam’s visit to the United States “has been postponed due to his pressing commitments here.” The spokesman
further added, “There is no other reason of postponing the visit.”
Despite the stormy diplomatic relations between Pakistan and the US, it is believed that intelligence sharing and cooperation between the two countries is continued. However, frustration on both sides is growing on how to break
the stalemate.
After the NATO summit that concluded last week, over five drone attacks have hit Pakistani soil, and this has exacerbated the situation as Pakistan has been demanding the US to stop the air strikes.
The Chicago summit was believed to bridge the emerging gaps between Pakistan and the United States, however, on its conclusion; it only worsened the already bleak picture or mutual relations.
Amid this entire scenario, there still is no final deal signed upon restoring the Nato supply routes through Pakistan.
