The upcoming budget…
Monday, May 28th, 2012 2:16:51 by Faisal FarooqFinance Minister Dr. Hafeez Sheikh will be the most talked about personality in the days to come as he will present the fiscal budget for 2012-13 in the National Assembly.
Apparently, it will be a dreadful exercise. It will be a chest thumping day for the government while both the opposition and the media will have a field day.
The budget is going to be thrashed endlessly despite how well-drafted it is, how carefully planned it is and how good it attempt so make lemonade out of the lemons.
The million dollar question is how to spend limited resources to best achieve unlimited benefits. The self-proclaimed economic pundits on Television screens always tell that it will further press the already pressed classes.
Putting aside the issues of Lyari, Siachen and the contempt of court issue, the all-rounder experts will leave no stone unturned to lament how the incumbent is not going to relief the people.
Both the mainstream media and the opposition in Pakistan make efforts to ensure that the government does not increase those limited wants. They make it impossible to reform the taxation structure in the country in order to avoid their skin.
Making the situation more complicated, those opposing tax reforms in the country are not speak for lower taxes but are contrasting a system that continues to make easy to cheat on them.
They also argue that the lower class is being crushed under the weight of taxation which is not true at some cases. According to the government sources, it is going to impose only two taxes, the sales tax and income tax in the upcoming budget.
Those who earn less Rs 30, 000 will be exempted from the income tax. According to the explanation given by the officials, food and shelter will be exempted from sales tax in which the poor spend bulk of money.
The owners of the mainstream media belong to elite class while the human resource is culled from the middle-class. To hell with the poor, these demographics will oppose anything that affects them adversely.
