IPL success will help KKR win CL T20, says Manoj Tiwary
Tuesday, May 29th, 2012 2:38:24 by Rana Nasir GhafoorKolkata Knight Riders batsman Manoj Tiwary has said that a comprehensive win in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has made his side favourite for the Champions League T20, scheduled to take place in India later this year.
The Gautam Gambhir-led side thrashed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the grand finale to lift the IPL trophy for the first time. It was an exciting game, as both sides played some very good cricket.
Batting first, CSK posted a massive total of 190 on the board, thanks to brilliant batting by Suresh Raina and Michael Hussey. Murali Vijay also did well to score crucial 40-odd runs at the top order.
In reply, the Kolkata batsmen performed magnificently and achieved the target quite easily. While Jacques Kallis smashed a superb half century, Bisla was star of the show, as he clattered rapid 89 runs to ensure his side’s comfortable
win.
The Knight Riders remained consistent right through the contest. After an excellent show in the first round of the championship, they beat Delhi Daredevils in the elimination round before thumping dangerous CSK in the big final.
The Super Kings were full of confidence after their victories over Mumbai Indians and Delhi, but KKR did not let them spoil their party.
Enormously delighted over his side’s great show this season, Tiwary believes following an excellent IPL success, the Shahrukh Khan-owned outfit has a great chance of winning the Champions League.
"Of course we are favourites in the Champions League after having won the IPL. Everyone will expect us to win the tournament," Tiwary said.
"Players like Sunil Narine, Jacques Kallis and Yusuf Pathan were taken in as they had done well for other franchises. We had a very good team combination and that was crucial," he said.
Kolkata qualified for the Champions League last season, but failed to do anything special. Talking about his team’s below par performance in the previous editions of the lucrative T20 league, Tiwary was not reluctant to admit
that things had not been working for his team, adding, "somewhere down the line the chemistry was missing and things did not fall in place".
