Weeks after the Nazis came to Warsaw, Irena enlisted in the ranks of the clandestine organization Zegota, which was intended to help the Jews, and helped create about 3,000 false documents with those who tried to reach out to families of this ethnic group,
whose members were regarded as subhuman by Nazi soldiers. A decision by knowing the great risk that such a move could mean for their physical integrity and that of their relatives, as attendance was punishable by death penalty not only for those who were exposed
but for their families.
As an employee of social services, the Nazis managed to grant him special permission to enter the Warsaw Ghetto and periodically check if there were outbreaks of typhus, an infectious disease that German soldiers feared would eventually extend beyond their
walls.
It was precisely this pass and the consciousness of knowing in a unique position to help thousands of innocent the circumstances that prompted her to help the desperate residents bringing them food, medicine and clothing. But after checking how terrified
the help given to them was not enough and thousands were dying every month victims of famine and disease took courage and began to hide children in the ambulance that drove them out incognito and the Ghetto.
