Pakistan mobile communication market still waiting for 3G wireless network launch – Part 1

It has been more than six months that the public has heard about any advancements in the licensing of the wireless technology

The current world is moving toward mobile computing and personal computers, desktops and laptops are just bound to be household articles. Tablets and smartphones offer everything from content writing to web browsing and even more with state-of-the-art music and video playbacks. However, Pakistani market still lacks much of the fun that the West is having with these devices.

World is churning out productivity from Android Ice Cream Sandwich, iOS 5 and Windows Phone 7.5 Mango and we are still stuck at mostly Java and Symbian phones. Though Pakistan holds a market share of Android and iOS devices that might make bleep on the radar but that is the extent of it.

Smartphones are almost worthless without the apps and especially when you cannot milk the most out of them via the internet. Most of the apps are standalone undoubtedly but main depend on high stream of internet links. Using these applications on GPRS and EDGE wireless networks is the same as using torrent clients on a 56K dial-up connection. They might work but will take ages to download and upload data.

That time is not far when we heard that 3G (HSPA) is coming to Pakistan. The news brought a big smile on many faces but that was news. Nobody has heard anything since then. The bids are off and until Pakistan Telecommunications Authority issues licences to cellular networks, iPhone 4Ss and Galaxy S IIs and S IIIs are mere show offs.

To date only PTCL offers 3G EVO Broadband, which is limited to either desktops and laptops or their Android smartphones Evodroid Touch N Fly and IVIO Icon Pro with Android Froyo.
