Pakistan mobile communication market still waiting for 3G wireless network launch – Part 2
Tuesday, May 29th, 2012 6:23:11 by Usman KhalidThe world is thriving on 3G and 4G (HSPA+ and LTE) for communicating with each other. Researches have shown that most of the communication done on platforms like Facebook and Twitter are through mobile devices because they are always with the users. In Pakistan, the idea is still in its nascent stages.
The story of tablets is even more complicated than smartphones. This genre has seen the worst flop in the country. Even though they are the tuned down hybrid of smartphones and laptops, they do most of the work that a high-end laptop or a high-end smartphone can.
The only tablet that has seen little success is EVO Tab from PTCL, mainly because it has 3G connectivity and is cheaper than the competition in Pakistani market. iPad is successful at this rate but again its productivity is limited and for tablets slow internet connection or the complete lack of it, thereof, is even crucifying.
Without a 3G or 4G network, tablet are not communicative and that the big reason why people by these devices. Skype and other telephony applications are worthless without a wireless connection, let alone social networking apps like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
However, one advantage of tablets is for students. These slates are easy to handle and are extremely portable. These devices come handy when taking notes or prepping research papers. But the public that can afford it has to be educated on the matter. Tablet vendors should focus on this particular market segment to bring forth the technology that is affordable and portable.
The notion of 4G coming to Pakistan is farfetched when the idea of 3G network in the country has not even seen the light of day.
But even 256 Kbps to 1 Mbps connection will be a sight for the sore eyes. Will it happen in our age is a matter that PTA has to handle. For the time being keep enjoying the same GPRS and EDGE.
