Islamabad: (Wednesday, May 30, 2012) The Supreme Court, while rejecting documents submitted by the Minister for Interior Rehman Malik in the dual nationality case, directed the minister’s counsel to submit the certificate that
is usually issued by the government of the United Kingdom at the time of renouncing citizenship.
Accepting the petition filed by Syed mehmood Akhtar Naqvi, a three-member bench comprised of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, Justice Jawwad S. Khwaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain heard the dual nationality case.
Giving his remarks during the hearing, Chief Justice said that Farahnaz Ispahani’s National Assembly membership had been cancelled for holding dual citizenship, and that the court could not provide the minister with special treatment.
Appearing before the bench, Azhar Chaudhry, Malik’s counsel in the case, submitted documents pertaining to the minister renouncing his British citizenship.
While rejecting the documents that provided no evidence of Malik renouncing British Nationality, Chief Justice asked the counsel as to why the paperwork that the court had ordered was not produced.
Lamenting the fact that the court’s orders were not being taken seriously, Justice Khawaja noted that the court’s orders were being ridiculed.
The Chief Justice reiterated that the Constitution did not allow dual nationals to become members of the parliament.
The court was also informed about another MNA Zahid Iqbal who reportedly held a dual passport. To which the court said that one could be punished for six months in prison for that reason.
The court has now given authorities time until next hearing to complete the documents and submit them as per the requirements.
