SMS will dominate until 2016

The use of instant messaging services on mobile as WhatsApp, the IMessage Apple or Samsung Chaton has grown a lot. However, according to a survey SMS will dominate the traffic and revenue, at least until 2016.

This is the main conclusion of a detailed study by the consulting firm Informa Telecoms & Media that represents convincing data: WhatsApp, BlackBerry Messenger and company generated 35% of total traffic in the mobile messaging
in 2016 but generated only 8% revenue.

Before these services, the SMS had generated 42% of traffic, an estimated 65% of total revenues. That is, against the myth that has now killed by WhatsApp SMS.

Both will generate 138,500 million Euros in Western Europe over the next four years. Yes, quite some time unless a business but still very, very juicy. It must be said that data from Informa is interesting. They have provided overall
figures and the picture is very different according to the country of the beholder.

In Spain, for example, the number of sent SMS has continued to decline since 2007, and revenue of the operators through SMS fell 26% in the last two years. Hence, Telefonica recently launched Tu Me , your own ‘WhatsApp’.

In the Netherlands, Norway and Denmark the decline is noted in a similar fashion. In these locations, it is likely to exceed IM to SMS traffic much before 2016. However, in other countries with high penetration of Smartphones,
SMS is growing, less than other years, but growing.

Pamela Clark-Dickson, who conducted the study at Informa, has conceded that sending of SMS has increased in some countries due to new flat rate voice and data with very aggressive rates.
