Islamabad: (Tuesday, May 29, 2012) Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said here today that both Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf Chairman Imran Khan and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) president Nawaz Sharif were not members of the
parliament, and thus, they could have no idea of the importance of this institution.
Talking to the journalists here in Islamabad, The prime minister said that speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza’s ruling pertaining to his disqualification reference was final, and no one could challenge it in the Supreme
Court.
Last week, Mirza rejected the court’s decision rendering the PM disqualification requesting the speaker to initiate with the disqualification proceedings for being convicted by the apex court in a contempt of court case.
The speaker’s ruling has been recently challenged by Khawaja Asif of the PML-N and Imran Khan.
Expressing his stance over this development, Gilani said that he will not take the opposition’s threats seriously as they hold no water. He alleged that both these parties have nothing else to do except misleading the people.
PM Gilani further said that the parliament could not be held hostage to a handful of people. He said, “The prime minister is not important, it is the parliament and the system that is important.”
Criticizing the Punjab government, Gilani said that the provincial leaders were not working for the welfare of the people and that the ruling party (PML-N) should be held accountable for its performance.
Talking about the upcoming elections, the PM said that the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) wanted to hold free and fair elections in the country.
