Internet addiction: A hoax now proved to hold staggering truth – Part 1
Wednesday, May 30th, 2012 6:05:32 by Usman KhalidPersonal computing started to find its footing in the technology world in early 80s. Though it came to Asia later in that decade, much late in South Asian countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh, it spread like fire in the jungle in the streets. However, almost every person in the contemporary world has been affected by computers, directly or indirectly.
All this was spurred and catalyzed by the advent of internet late in the same century. Designed for a niche in the West, the cloud now spans of the entire world, be it the Alps or Sahara Desert. Though this technology has its benefits that almost every demographic milks, intentionally or unintentionally, it is not without its haunts and daunts.
Many experts all around the world have been clamouring about the aftermaths of the technology but no one seems to have paid any attention to the matter. Until now, when several researches have shown that excessive use of internet results in its addiction, much like heroin or any other addictive drug.
There had been work done in the past on this topic but most of it was warded away because of the lack of evidence. Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD), as it is now called, has its symptoms but they are so subtle that they pass under the radar of the critics of this concept.
However, the new research has shown not only paper-based evidence of IAD but several brain scans. These tests show that the addiction to internet and computers for that matter is damaging to several crucial parts of the human brain.
First, let’s talk about internet. Business is moving in the fast lane, especially the invention of airplanes has rediscovered the tarmac to move the business vehicle. Therefore, in the late 80s there came the need of a common platform where everyone could communicate with everyone else in a cheap and authentic manner, without the need of being physically present. Emails sprung and took hold on majority of communications, abolishing the concept of traditional mail.
