The Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, took down the Romanian contestant, Adrian Ungur, in a four-set thriller at the French Open 2012 on Wednesday. He juggled up a 6-3, 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-3 victory against the Romanian to charge into the round of 32 at this prestigious
clay court tournament taking place in Paris, France.
The 16-time Grand Slam titlist, Federer, stayed on the right path to reclaim the top spot at the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings after dumping Ungur. This was not the first time Federer faced difficulty in early rounds. He struggled against
Jose Acasuso and Albert Montanes in 2009 but managed to get the breakthrough.
Currently ranked third at the ATP rankings, Federer thundered into the Court Philippe Chatrier and after drawing the first blood in the second game, he jumped to a 3-0 lead. He swiped in his remaining serves without facing any real trouble and clicked the
opener with a 6-3 win.
The 30-year-old maintained his intensity in the following set and earned the critical break in the opening game. He then capitalised on another break chance in the fifth game and leaped to a 5-1 lead. Federer held his serve once more and bagged the set by
winning six games to two.
The underdog on the other hand raised the level of his game in the third set. He smashed 16 winners and produced a better first serve share. Despite failing to break the Swiss’ serve, Ungur imposed a tie-breaker and dominated in it to clinch the set with
a 7-6(6) score line.
Federer sought his momentum again in the fourth set and after cashing in lone break opportunity in the second game, he took a 3-0 lead. The Swiss warded off both breakpoints he came across and held remaining serves, eventually sealing the deal with a 6-3
win.
Next in queue for the Swiss Maestro is the local contestant, Nicolas Mahut.
