Wednesday, May 30th, 2012 6:05:51 by Usman KhalidStarbucks Coffee has been running a twisted road and the very tarmac that the company paved the road with is giving it the bumps. Yes, it is their own concept of Starbucks being the ‘Third Place’ is giving them a hard time in managing the foot traffic and accommodating them in the closed and limited confines of their outlets.
It has been observed in the last half a decade that the Espresso making company has taken certain steps to manage huge number of customers at their outlet by replacing Baristas with automatic coffee machines and a slew of ready-made products.
What Starbucks sells is not the coffee but the lifestyle it provides and the concept of Third Place springs from it. Starbucks has been selling on the idea of providing a comfortable sitting space to people to spend as much time at their shops as they want. The place can be a meeting place for a group of people or someone can take his/her work to the shop and spend quality time in the community.
Various psychologists and researches have concurred to the point that Starbucks has sold many customers with this idea and not in a negative way but very community-oriented manner that boosts socializing even in ultra-urban area like New York City or Tokyo.
These experts have explicitly agreed to the concept of a third place in the life of every human being. Every man or woman has a home as the primary place to live and office as the second place to work. However, both of these venues have their positives and negatives and every man needs an exit from the mechanical life. This is where the third place comes.
