Over $10.1 million dollars have been raised for UNICEF’s work in helping children across the world thanks to teams of celebrities getting together for the fourth Soccer Aid at Manchester’s Old Trafford Stadium on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the U.K. government pledged to match all funds raised through donations for the global charity. "The huge public response to the Soccer Aid appeal shows that those watching tonight’s game are united not only by a love of football but by a fantastic
generosity of spirit. We will reflect that spirit by matching pound for pound from our existing aid budget all public donations, helping UNICEF reach hundreds of thousands more children in east and west Africa," said International Development Secretary Andrew
Mitchell, according to media reports.
On the England team, you saw stars such as former footballers including Graeme Le Saux, Martin Keown, Kevin Phillips, David Seaman, Teddy Sheringham and Des Walker. Comedians John Bishop and Paddy McGuinness, singers Olly Murs and Mark Owen, also joined
in the fun along with Robbie Williams as team captain. Sam Allardyce managed the team.
On team Rest of the World were Hollywood superstars Will Ferrell, Woody Harrelson, James McAvoy, Ed Norton and Mike Myers, along with actor Gerard Butler, and former boxer Joe Calzaghe. Chef Gordon Ramsay traded passes with star of stage and screen Michael
Sheen as captain. They were joined by football greats Hernan Crespo, Roy Keane, Clarence Seedorf, Jaap Stam, Edwin Van Der Sar and Freddie Ljungberg. Former Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish, spearheaded the team.
"They’re feeding kids, they’re educating kids, they’re vaccinating kids," said Woody Harrelson, according to media reports. "They’re an incredible organisation, and this is an incredible event."
Gordon Ramsay was stretchered off the field after a rough play, but recovered. At the end of the game, Team England emerged victorious with a three to one win. The funds raised at Soccer Aid for UNICEF will bring hope to a growing number of the world’s most
vulnerable children, many in the thick of suffering and poverty at the centre of the food crisis of East and West Africa.
