Jenson Button believes unpredictability of the season is confusing the fans
Thursday, May 31st, 2012 2:06:42 by Kashif KhanJenson Button believes that the season’s unpredictability has caused the fans to find Formula 1 to be a “little strange.”
Since Button’s win at the opening race of the season in Australia, he has not been able to progress as he would have liked to so far. During the Monaco GP, he had to retire when only eight laps were left to complete the race. The result slipped him to number eighth in the Drivers’ Championship.
He has only been able to score two points off the last three races which is disappointing considering McLaren have the one of the fastest cars on the grid. In Button’s defence though Lewis Hamilton has not been able to win a Grand Prix yet, while six different drivers have won six Grands Prix so far in the season.
He said, “We obviously need to get back on track and start fighting the guys at the front but next race that could be Grosjean or Perez might get another good result or Kobayashi or Massa.”
He was at a loss to explain what has changed since the excellent start. “The first three races were good and then suddenly in the last three … I don’t know where it is. The pace and the feeling that I’m getting from the car I’ve not had before. It’s tough but it’s nothing we can’t sort out – it’s just a question of whether we do it in time,” he added.
It will be important for Button and McLaren that he does well in Canada. The Canadian Grand Prix is very different from the recently concluded Monaco GP. It will give ample opportunity to all the drivers to show the true pace of their cars. It is also going to allow overtaking opportunities and cars that have good pace will most likely be amongst the top five.
It will be interesting to see how Button handles this pressure of performing well to move up the ranks. It will be a test of his nerves as the competition is very fierce with Lotus, Ferrari and Red Bull showing strong performances. The next race is scheduled for June 10, 2012.
