Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (2012): The first Ivy Bridge Core i5 laptop is out – Part 1
Thursday, May 31st, 2012 6:41:03 by Usman KhalidIntel has officially released the third generation Ivy Bridge Core i5 processors. Lenovo takes the honour of assembling a device around the new CPU, Lenovo ThinkPad X230. The laptop has been officially launched but its release date is still pending.
The new X230 is the upgraded successor to last year’s X220. ThinkPad X-series is Lenovo’s line of notebooks that are targeted at the professional customers. The majority of X-series buyers are the corporate entities that further issue them to their employees who cannot compromise on the performance and have a lot of travelling on their job description.
The fact that these laptops are strictly for professional use is apparent from the body work. These are not like the line contemporary line of notebooks marketed as Ultrabooks and neither are they anywhere near the tablet-laptop hybrids. These devices have a narrow market that starts and ends at professionals.
The overall matte magnesium casing is a clear statement from the designers of X230 that it is for some serious work. X230 is not a looker as well with a small footprint, to be perfectly cupped in the lap, and an inch thick, which is a far cry from the current line of ultrabooks.
The new X230 has a Ivy Bridge Core i5 processor, number of USB ports in addition to DisplayPort and VGA socket. There are the old-school ExpressCard slots as well for professionals to slot in their required PC-cards for their own peripherals. The metal hinges let the screen go back a full 180 degrees and the screen has wide viewing angles.
Design
The new X230 tows the line of its older brother X220 in shape and figure. It has almost the same design and thickness and is available with the same options as the last one. However, the big difference is in processor, but we will get to that in a moment.
