Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (2012): The first Ivy Bridge Core i5 laptop is out – Part 2
Thursday, May 31st, 2012 6:40:54 by Usman KhalidThe screen-lid is not buckle attached in the front but a magnet inside the bezel does the trick, it can be thumb opened. The metal hinges provide strong support to screen and longevity as well. Due to the fact the lid is not attached in a MacBook-manner, behind the rear end of the dock, it can be rotated 180 degrees. The wide viewing angles of the LED backlit 12.5-inch screen support this feature.
The left and right sides are saturated with four USB ports, one DisplayPort and VGA connectivity option. The company has all it covered when it comes to connectivity. There are audio input/output jacks and optical drive on either side as well.
One of the most important things in this new device is the keyboard. Gone are the days of the typical ThinkPad keyboard. Lenovo has replaced that with the trending island-style keyboard that was seen in Lenovo X1 as well. The keys are approachable and have a comforting muffled click sound. They are curved at the bottom and have two different backlit LED colour schemes that can be dimmed at the users liking.
The top of the screen bezel houses a high-quality camera and an LED light source, which comes handy when there is low lighting in the surroundings like an airplane.
The touch pad is a turndown. For some reasons, Lenovo does not seem to let go of tiny track pad that has left and right click up top, which in itself is a theorem of its own. There is a mouse joystick in the keyboard, which immediately takes us back in 20th century. The track pad however, is quite responsive, not as much as MacBooks but supports multi-gestures nonetheless.
Hardware
This is the part where ThinkPad thrives. Intel launched the 3rd-gen Ivy Bridge Core i7 quad-core processors a couple of months. Their plan for the rest of the series to come out was further in the summers.
