Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (2012): The first Ivy Bridge Core i5 laptop is out – Part 3
Thursday, May 31st, 2012 6:40:47 by Usman KhalidLenovo X230 becomes the first laptop to incorporate the new Core i5-3320M processor. The standard issue has the dual-core processor clocked at 2.6 GHz. The high-end option has Ivy Bridge Core i7 quad-core CPU clocked at 2.9 GHz. The new processor is supported by 4 GB of DDR3 RAM that is a standard for every issue of the X230.
The laptop misses any dedicated GPUs though. For a professional laptop, an NVIDIA graphics card somewhere in the top end of the line should have had its presence, but then again who wants to play high-end graphics on a company-issued laptop … on a plane.
The internal HD4000 integrated graphics card has a good overall performance. Though it did not come up to the levels of the same chip in the Core i7 package and was not even close to the performances expected before its release.
Mid-level games performed mediocre on graphics at full blast but the feat improved up a notch when the graphics and details were tweaked a little.
The 12.5-inch screen has a 1,366×768-pixel resolution backed by HD4000. This is a standard resolution in almost all 11-, 12-, 13- and even 14-inch laptops; most of the ultrabooks have the same pixel density. However, the small real estate of the 12.5-inch display has a denser and vivid output that was quite satisfactory.
Performance
The Lenovo comes equipped with WiMaX 4G capability and 4G LTE is optional. Gobby antennae are inside the hood for wireless communication.
The 6-cell Li-ion battery brings a 6 hours and 4 minutes of life to the computer on DC, which is 37 minutes less than last year’s X220. The optional 9-cell battery will get the user through the day with careful use of the machine, which is promising for regular travellers.
