Samsung Chromebook and Chromebox: 2012 Chrome OS-based devices – Part 1

Samsung Electronics rolled out two Google Chrome OS-based devices this month, Samsung Chrombox and Samsung Chromebook. Both run on Google’s web-based light-weight operating system.

Google has been showering money on Chrome project of late and has gone to the length in promoting both the OS and the browser. For the first time in a long time, Chrome surpassed Internet Explorer in the race of wide usage of browsers, according to some surveys.

The previous iterations of the operating system were mere extensions of the Chrome OS and failed in the market miserably. However, the new version of the OS has one functionality that has made the difference, stand-alone and offline computing. Though the operating system has not been excepted in the masses on such scales, the process is just starting.

Both Chromebook and Chromebox are company’s latest step to promote the operating system and Samsung has joined hands in the venture.

Due to the light weight nature of the operating system, the devices use minimal hardware, in fact, Intel’s almost forgotten processors called Celeron. Though it might look a turnoff to many, the processor works at blistering speeds and computes almost every task with perfection.

However, here is the pun, the new OS still has a lot to absorb from the environment. Although the computing is fast, there are still limitations to applications and compatibility with files and other software.

Moreover, these devices ask persistently for an internet connection, which is easy to feed to the Chromebox that is fixed in one position but for the Chromebook it becomes almost impossible to feed broadband at all places, at home, at work and especially during travels.

Google offers a 4G LTE package for the Chromebook but that raises the price further up from $549. However, the package is worth every penny.
