Samsung Chromebook and Chromebox: 2012 Chrome OS-based devices – Part 3

The Chrome OS works marvellously on the laptop but the occasional lack of internet connection is a hurdle. Google offers 4G connectivity but that take the device up on the price scale.

As compared to other notebooks, the Chromebook is extremely cheap at $549 but its functionality is more toward the tablet category. The new laptop however, performs better than other Windows-based ultrabooks and fauxtrabooks.

It comes with the same Celeron CPU clocked at 1.9 GHz supported by 4 GB of RAM, the same storage capacity of 16 GB SSD.

The 12.1-inch LED-backlit screen has a denser pixel presence. The keyboard is not crampy and works seamlessly. The track pad is big and supports multi gestures.

It weighs at 3.1 to 3.7 pounds.

Performance

The Chrome is quick to turn on and turn off. It takes less than 10 seconds to reboot whereas, a Windows-based device takes around 35 seconds in high-end specs. The sleep/wake-up transition is almost instant and there is no lag in between.

The new Chrome OS is an upgrade in the offline computing. Rather than an extended version of Chrome browser, it now boasts a file manager that can store and run different media files and office documents.

It supports most famous document extensions like .doc, .docx and .pdf. It also has support for media files like .wmv, .mp3 and so on and so forth.

There are other extensions as well that this operating system is compatible with.

The applications pool is a shortfall on Chrome’s account. It has next to nothing to offer to the users in terms of stand-alone apps, much less than Windows. However, it makes it up for the applications in the online services. Google Play has room for games and media apps. YouTube can play full HD 1080p videos.

Conclusion

In short, the operating system still has room for improvement. Despite the fact that Chromebook is an extremely attractive device, the price is still high for a tablet-like device. Google should improve the OS and lower down the price.
