Kolohe Andino and Alex Ribeiro qualify for Quiksilver Saquarema Prime Quarter-finals

America’s Kolohe Andino and Brazil’s Alex Ribeiro moved into the Quarter-finals at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola after putting on a superb performance to claim victory in their respective Round 5 (Round of 16) at the point-break of Itauna Beach in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday, May 26.

Andino defeated Brazil’s Jean Da Silva in the third heat to advance into the next stage of the competition, consequently removing the latter from the race for the event title.

The fourth heat saw Ribeiro get the better of France’s Romain Cloitre to make his way through into the Quarter-finals, bringing the competition to an early end for his competitor in the process.

The fifth day of the latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME event saw three-to-five foot waves breaking at the primary event site, giving the top surfing talent from around the globe plenty of opportunity to put their exquisite skills on display while competing for a place in the Quarter-finals.

The third heat of Round 5 saw Andino and Da Silva take each other on in a man-on-man battle. The local powerhouse took only a few moments before launching into a series of quick turns to post a 7.17 on the score-board. Locking a perfect barrel in the dying minutes of the heat, Andino added a near-perfect 9.57 to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 16.74 points.

Da Silva got off to an excellent start, scoring an 8.17 off his first business-wave, but only managed to score a 0.73 off his second-second wave, thus finishing with a heat-total of 8.90 points. The 7.84-point deficit resulted in his elimination from the competition while sending Andino into the next round.

“The sets were taking a really long time to come in, so I couldn’t believe it when that barrel popped up,” said Andino. “My board helped me out, I set my rail in there and I was able to make it out. It was amazing! This contest has been so much fun, great waves, a perfect day and I hope it stays the same for tomorrow.”

The fourth heat pitted Ribeiro against Cloitre, offering the winner a spot in the Quarter-finals.

The local powerhouse Ribeiro went through a series of average wave-scores before locking a juicy wave to post a 9.00 on the score-board. Adding a 6.07 to his account in the dying minutes of the heat, the Brazilian surfer finished with a heat-total of 15.07 points.

Cloitre came up with a pretty ordinary response, scoring a 4.33 and 6.83 off his best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 11.16 points, thus surrendering victory and consequently the Quarter-final spot to Ribeiro.
