It has been recently revealed that four women belonging to the trial areas have been shot to death due to a decision taken by the tribal jirga. The jirga had condemned them to death sentence for participating in the dance at a wedding along with male counter
parts. The jrga determined that the four women were in contradiction with the severe tribal laws of the Azad Khel tribe and therefore they were put to death.
The death of the four women occurred at the hands of their own families who shot them in the head. The women belonged to the village of UC Peech Bala, Palas tehsil. Despite the fact that the news has made it to the public, the local police and officials
are denying the fact that the incident took place and are maintaining the stance that the women are still alive and in their homes.
Despite the insistence of the local police, a local resident gave the following statement, “Yes, they killed the condemned women on May 30.”
However, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has become active in this regard and has taken up the matter by decreeing that the decision taken by the jirga of the tribe was illegal.
The women were considered as being guilty after they were seen dancing and singing along with men in a mobile phone video.
The police had registered an FIR against two brothers, Bin Yasir and Gul Nazar, for allegedly making the film and uploading it on a video sharing site.
The video caused a lot of commotion in the community, which felt the video had stained the honor of the tribeswomen. According to sources, elders of the Azad Khel tribe summoned a jirga at the Seertaiy village, which sentenced the four women and the two
men to death.
It was reported that both men had fled the area. However, they were arrested by the police in Alai tehsil, Battagram district on Sunday.
The chief justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, made the following statement today on the matter, “This incident is a gross violation of fundamental human rights.”
