Imran Khan demands audit of all discretionary funds
Monday, June 4th, 2012 10:28:53 by Faisal FarooqJoining the chorus in criticizing the government, Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan demanded an audit of all discretionary funds of the president, prime minister, chief ministers and defence budget allocated for the armed forces.
Addressing a press conference to give his party’s response to budget presented for the year 2012-13, the cricketer-turned-politician condemned the heavy amount allocated for the armed forces, saying that these funds should be audited.
Terming the budget as a fraud with the price-stricken masses, he observed, “It is now important to make National Accountability Bureau (NAB) a sovereign institution in a bid to bring to an end corruption of the government which has reached all time high so that the this menace could be stopped”.
In his view, the embezzlement done in the public sector corporations had reached billions of rupees, taking the ratio of corruption a point where the people could not co-exist with it
The deficit of the Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) reached up to Rs 40 billion in the last few years while similar was the case of other national entities including Pakistan Railways and Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), he added.
The former captain further said corrupt people could not survive in the country, flaying criticism at political leaderships of various parities which had neither been paying taxes nor correctly declaring their assets.
In his view, it was important for the progress of the country that the powerful people should pay taxes and declare their assets. The country could only survive if the elite lot was taken into the tax net, he added.
Imran Khan was of the opinion that outstanding arrears were a result of 400,000 illegal connections highlighted by the Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) had to be borne by the consumers in the shape of tariff increases.
He noted, “A survey conducted by Water and Power Development Authority(WAPDA) depicts that in the last four years, almost 2.8 million air conditioners were bought while bills for only 0.1 million were being paid”.
The former cricketer called the politics of the PML-N a drama, saying the chief minister Punjab was using four houses as his offices in the province.
