Nintendo unleashes Wii U GamePad: A new beast in portable gaming that is more than portable

Nintendo Co. Ltd. literally launched its new portable gaming console called Wii U GamePad in an online streaming presentation before the E3 Expo starts on June 5. The whole presentation was conducted by the company’s president, Satoru Iwata.

The presentation started by commendation to the word ‘Unique’ written in Japanese as founding stone on the office wall since the very early days of the company. The president linked Nintendo’s success and the arrival of the new device to the framed word.

Iwata emphasized on the social relationships and how far we are from each other despite being under the same roof. Nintendo brought families together with inventions like Wii, the President claimed. The GamePad is another step in bring families even closer.

The new Wii U is a multipurpose device that can do from playing games to watching televisions to connecting with friends and families, not even in one room but in the world.

The device is compact and sports a 6.2-inch super sensitive touch-screen. Alongside a hoard of keys and couple of joy sticks, the console incorporates a gyroscope and an accelerometer to better interaction with the games.

However, the most important of them all is the near-field communications chip inside the casing that lets the user to play and write/read data on/from cards and figures, in addition to communicating with other NFC devices nearby.

GamePad also has an IR sensor that turns it into a television remote control and a remote console for playing games on television sets. Wii remotes can also be used to interact with the game on TVs via Wii U.

Nintendo also introduced Miiverse, a social network to connect with family, friends and gaming colleagues. The user can post comments, problems and achievements on the network via the touch screen and interact with other Nintendo users like any other social media network.

The company has replaced 3DS-like circle pads with stick-form elements that offer more control over the game as they are easy to bend. According to the President, the circle pads are for players who need a low profile for the hardware.

The company will be elaborating on the device and games designed for it at the E3 fare on June 5.
