Chris Gayle back in West Indies squad
Tuesday, June 5th, 2012 1:58:07 by Rana Nasir GhafoorStar opening batsman Chris Gayle has formally been recalled to West Indies’ national side after an exile of more than a year. Gayle was not a part of the Caribbean side that recently suffered an embarrassing 2-0 defeat at the hands of England.
Wasting no more time, the selectors have recalled Gayle to strengthen the side for the upcoming One Day International series, starting on June 16th. It will be Gayle’s first game since the ICC World Cup last year.
"Directors of the West Indies Cricket Board recently met by teleconference and are pleased that consistent with his previous commitment Mr Chris Gayle has made himself available for selection to the West Indies team," a WICB statement had said of the meeting.
"The board believes that Mr Gayle’s stated commitment to West Indies cricket will be an asset to the team and looks forward to his contributions in that regard."
The 32-year-old has played in 228 ODIs, scoring over 8000 runs at an average of more than 39. Gayle is excited about his return, looking forward to resume his campaign on a high note.
Gayle said, “I am very strong mentally. I believe your mental preparation is the key towards being a successful batsman. I do that by assessing the game before actually getting into the middle.”
“I have a look at things the night before, assess the team I’m are going to play, think about the bowlers they are going to field and try and play my innings in my mind before I actually step out on the field to get a feel. That’s how I analyse things.”
The left-hander is certainly the biggest entertainment in the modern-day game. In an exclusive chat with
Wisden India, the great man described,
“I started off as a cricketer and then became an entertainer, so I am definitely both. I can entertain both on the field and off it. You just need to adapt to the situation.”
