Nintendo releases Wii U GamePad, Microsoft launches SmartGlass at E3
Tuesday, June 5th, 2012 6:18:09 by Usman KhalidThis year’s E3 seminar is all about connectivity and integration of different devices under one roof. Microsoft brought SmartGlass, Nintendo showed Wii U GamePad and Sony joins PlayStation 3 and Vita.
Though the concept of PlayStation Mobile is still unclear but alongside broadening the platform’s horizon to Android OS, the company might also integrate Vita with PS3.
Nintendo, on the other hand has clearly brought the new Wii U GamePad to the market with sharing media as the founding concept. The GamePad’s major purpose is to stream media from the console to the television screens and make it a peripheral for gaming on big screens. Although the device has its own touch-sensitive screen and all the controls to play the games on-site, the inclusion of a sensor and gyroscope/accelerometer hint that Wii controller is now getting mature.
In demo videos, the Japanese company clearly showed games being played on the GamePad and mirroring on the big screen, even more so the GamePad’s touch screen was a peripheral to the television where the Avatars—from Miiverse—were playing the games.
The domination at the event was shared by Microsoft as well. Though the company did not launch any portable Xbox, which was touted to be at the centre stage this year, the company launched a new application/service called Xbox SmartGlass.
Though its category is still ambiguous to experts, whether it is an application or a service, the services it provides are breathtaking. Apple has a total domination over gaming on smartphones but the benefits are limited to only iOS devices whereas, Microsoft takes that idea to another level.
With the help of SmartGlass the users will be able to stream games to portable devices like iPads, iPhones and iPod touches. Android and Windows Phone are also included in the equation but the spotlight is stolen by Apple products.
