Sony comes up with a new concept at E3, PlayStation Mobile
Tuesday, June 5th, 2012 6:18:15 by Usman KhalidElectronic Entertainment Expo (E3) kick-started on Tuesday, June 5 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in LA. The show’s first day was unsurprisingly dominated by the likes of Sony and Microsoft.
Sony showcased a number of new products and games that are exclusive to its gaming console PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. However, the most interesting among all was the new concept of PlayStation Mobile.
Though the aforementioned new product is neither tangible, nor can it be called a service. It is a new concept that brings PlayStation to every mobile gadget that runs Android. Since the buyout of Ericsson’s share in the joint venture, Sony Ericsson, the Japanese electronics company has been working very closely with Google on their mobile computing platform Android.
Sony has rolled out a number of Android smartphones and tablets this year and the crux of the whole notion, PlayStation Mobile, is that all Sony devices that run Android will become PlayStation peripherals to enjoy PS3 games.
The concept though itself is inspired by Apple’s iOS to create a new market segment for casual gamers. However, PS3 and PSV are not known for casual gaming, nor do developers take the platform casually.
The portable version of the PlayStation will surely suffer the consequences of this new strategy. Vita is a powerful mobile device that has state-of-the-art GPU and seamlessly connects with the internet to play server-based games and interact with social media networks.
The main reason why casual gamers prefer to play on smartphones is the accessibility and the portability of such devices. On the other hand Vita and the likes have to be carried along phones and tablets and their footprints are not even closer to that of smartphones.
Vita has moved a step further with a touch screen display and WiFi/3G inclusion are a plus. However, it cannot match the mobility of a smartphone.
There will be updates pouring in on the PlayStation games that will be compatible with Android smartphones.
