Mazda Miata PRHT Touring/Grand Touring/Special Edition (2012): Full Review – Part 2

Miata has been in active production for over 23 years and around a million roll on and screech rubber on the roads all over the world. The release of the Special Edition is a good move to stand out of the hoard and make your own sound. The limited number of the car might also favour the demand in the after sale market.

The body is somewhat the same as the 2011 model and there is no difference in shape with its soft top sibling. However, engine has been bumped up to 2.0-litre straight four-cylinder piston capacity that fires up 167 horsepower and 140 pound-feet of torque. It does not sound very promising, especially when you have all the Civic Sis that churn out power in the neighbourhood of 200 horsepower and Mustangs that unleash more than 300 ponies to the rear wheels.

However, the weight to power ratio is what favours the new Miata SE. At 2593 pounds, the car is lightweight and that not only is optimal on straight tarmacs but also in sharp turns. The car skids through the corners with sheer control and the drivability is even more easier as there is little between the driver and road. The Miata has negated the dogma of the likes of Ferraris and Porsches with a simple power train and lack of all the electronic equipment that cramps up the driver’s skills.

The pure ride in the new Miata offers a very satisfying feel with the exception of a traction control. However, the launch control system is optional in the Touring and Grand Touring but comes in as a standard in the SE.

Even on uneven roads the car gives a very controlled a smooth ride. Either the inclination or declination, the car is smooth to go with the manual six-speed transmission.
