Prime Minister Gilani terms clash of institutions dangerous
Thursday, June 7th, 2012 9:51:53 by Faisal FarooqPrime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has said the clash of institutions was dangerous for the country, urging them to work within their boundaries and according to their given mandates.
The premier during a dinner hosted by the Acting Chairman Senate said that institutions interfering with each other will result in a clash.
Taking credit for the historic move, he said that he had restored Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry after thinking on the issue for a whole night.
He observed, “The chief justice was removed by a dictator, a move that was protested against by the civil society and that he had spent countless days in the police lock up for the cause of the chief justice”.
Gilani further said that dictators have always amended the constitution to strengthen their grip onto the chair of power. He, however, said President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari did otherwise, surrendering his powers to empower the parliament.
The leadership of all political parties contributed to 103 amendments in the constitution, he said adding that any unconstitutional move would push the country backwards by several years.
He noted, “No prime minster had completed the five-year-tenure at office said Gilani whereas he had spent five years in jail”.
The premier was of the opinion that Parliament represents the aspirations of people and it is the responsibility of all parliamentarians to respect its sanctity.
In his view, rowdy behavior of the major opposition party, the PML-N, during the budget session was deplorable as it negated the established democratic practices.
He asserted that the government despite provocations would continue to uphold democratic principles and demonstrate civilized behavior in the upcoming budget session of the Punjab Assembly.
Commenting on the institution of Senate, he said it stabilized the country and the government would cause no hindrance in the upcoming elections rather it would ensure that elections are free and transparent.
Gilani believed that democratic system was taking roots in the country and ill-considered move could derail the democracy.
Saying that there was a way to voice protest within parliamentary means, he said resorting to rowdyism was uncalled for as it amounts to undermining the representation of the nation.
