Opposition leader of Punjab Assembly Raja Riaz states that the CJ should further distance himself from son’s case

Opposition leader of Punjab Assembly Raja Riaz has recently made a statement in which he said that the Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudry should also distance himself from the case of his son Arslan Iftikhar as the judges of the Supreme
Court are under him and may be influenced by him either consciously or unconsciously. Having said that, Raja Riaz also acknowledged the fact that the decision of the Chief Justice to step down from the three judge bench was a good one.

Before quitting the bench, the chief justice said, “The bench minus the CJP will continue to hear the case and the hearing will be conducted in the open court, so everyone could know about its fate.”

Having said that, the Chief Justice also commented on the view of some people that the judges might be influenced, “I want to tell you that judges are no more for sale.”

After his departure the two-member bench headed by Justice Jawwad S Khawaja conducted the hearing. Attorney General Irfan Qadir argued Dr Arsalan Iftikhar should not be treated now as the son of the CJP, but an ordinary citizen.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry started proceedings against his own son, Arsalan Ifthikhar, yesterday as he has been accused of receiving a bribe worth Rs 400 million by the real estate tycoon for the purpose
of having sway over some cases in the apex court of the country.

Before the hearing, Iftikhar told reporters he was innocent and that the Chief Justice had told him not to return home till the matter was settled by the apex court. Despite the fact that Malik Riaz is the key person in the case, he failed to make an appearance
before the Supreme Court yesterday. His aide told the bench that he was in Britain for medical treatment. The tycoon is facing a number of cases in the Supreme Court. These cases were filed by a number of persons who have accused Hussain of grabbing large
chunks of land and merging them into Bahria Town.

Zahid Hussain Bukhari has been making an appearance on behalf of Malik Riaz in front of the Supreme Court.
