Metallica’s Kirk Hammett: I have written close to 400 riffs for the new album
Friday, June 8th, 2012 6:14:23 by Haris AnsariMetallica lead guitarist, Kirk Hammett, has revealed that he has written close to 400 riffs for the band’s new studio album, but has admitted that only 20 of them could be said as great.
“I’m probably closer to 400 riffs now. But you know, out of those 400 there might only be 20 great riffs. It’d be something all 400 were triple-A, diamond-rated ideas, but that’s just not the case. Never was and never will be”, Hammett stated.
The 49-year-old guitarist went on to admit that the band’s lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, James Hetfield, might have close to 800 riffs. However, he confessed that many of those riffs would be discarded.
“It all depends on what we do with it”, Hammett added.
He also revealed that the band will only be concentrating on writing new songs.
“In the fall, we plan on concentrating a little more on writing songs and doing nothing else but just thinking about the new album. That should be interesting. We’ve talked about maybe going a little bit simpler. Now that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to happen. We’ve said many times, ‘Oh let’s try and do this,’ and then things end up so far left field of what we tried to do that we had no choice but just to go with it”, Hammett added.
Nonetheless, the guitarist did not reveal anything when they will be releasing their new album.
“It’s just whenever. Whenever it happens, it happens, really”, Hammett concluded.
Metallica’s last studio album, Death Magnetic, hit the stores in 2008.
