Toshiba Satellite U845W: A new ultrabook with a different shape – Part 2
Friday, June 8th, 2012 6:18:00 by Usman KhalidThe answer to this question is though yes but the explanation is twofold. First, we must identify what ultrabooks are all about. The first ultra-slim notebook was launched by Apple in the shape of MacBook Air in 2007. It was thin and light-weight to increase its potential for portability. It had a graphics card ample to play mid-level games and watch movies in wide-screen.
There was no optical drive in the MacBook Air. Apple foresaw the growing culture of online content. Though at the time of MacBook Air’s original launch, there was not enough content available on the web, much less any clouding service, however, now-a-days everything from personal to professional to sellable is available on the internet. This eliminates the need for a DVD/Blu-Ray drive in a piece of machine that is designed for normal use in the first place.
Though Air was not labelled as an ultrabook, it sprung the culture of one. The year 2011 saw a number of new super-slim laptops lurking around in the market.
In the light of the above, an ultrabook is a light-weight, under an inch thin laptop that can be carried around while walking, sitting in a café or travelling on a plane without the worry of battery charge of tens of hours.
Every of the aforementioned is available in the U845W, plus a wider screen. The wider footprint has been touted as difficult to handle but the depth and width are kept intelligently small enough to not to bother the user.
At 3.5 pounds it might not be the lightest of the bunch but is not heavy as well. At 0.83-inch width, it just wins the ultrabook moniker and honestly should not bother until someone has to crank open a vernier calliper.
The price at $999 is not huge for a new experimental ultrabook and moreover, is expected to get down a notch in a year or so. In sum, the Satellite U845W brings forth a new idea in ultrabooks and many vendors are expected to follow the suit in the near future.
The U845W will hit the shelves on 14.
