Facebook launches App Center: Recommended applications for friends and family – Part 1
Saturday, June 9th, 2012 4:35:47 by Usman KhalidThe Social Network has stepped further in bringing people together with more than 600 apps
Facebook has launched its own App Center on both desktop and mobile operating systems. On smartphones, it is available on both Android and iOS platforms. So far it has amassed around 600 applications for desktop, mobile or both.
The App Center however, should not be confused with Apple’s App Store or Google’s Google Play. This Center works on a different module. It recommends various applications on the basis of what is trending, what your friends are using and what is recommended to the user on the basis of previously used applications.
The Center is available in the bookmarks on the top left corner of the desktop screen below the notification bar. In some regions, the direct link to the centre might not be available but Facebook said that it will be available to every user in the next few weeks.
The App Center does not house any of the applications on its platform. Instead, it redirects the user to App Store or Google Play. There are numerous applications that use both iOS and Android platforms but some applications like Pinterest use specific operating systems, especially mobile ones. The App Center misses the details on the OS restrictions that lead to downloads on incompatible platform.
The basic menu on the desktop version has segregation of the applications in Entertainment, Games, News, etc. The mobile version has the same basic categorization but the further compartmentalization is missing from the scene which makes it a bit difficult for the user to find the desired application. However, Facebook is expected to update the search functionality of the mobile versions.
