Islamabad: (Monday, June 11, 2012) The Arsalan Iftikhar case is expected to take a new turn as the Bahria Town’s owner Malik Riaz decides to submit his reply while appearing before the apex court in person. Riaz, who was out of
country, has landed in Pakistan today just to mark his presence in the court.
Earlier, Zahid Bukhari, Malik’s lawyer, while speaking to the journalists said that his client will submit his reply to the court in the Arsalan Iftikhar case.
Commenting on the situation, the Supreme Court said that there was no need for Riaz to come to the court as presently it was enough for him to submit his reply only.
The apex court, however, asked for a quick reply so that the case should proceed and reach to a conclusion in the due period’s time. Today, as the two members bench resumed with the hearing, Dr Arsalan Iftikhar submitted his detailed
reply in compliance with the court orders while a reply was being awaited to be filed by Malik Riaz.
During the hearing, Dr Iftikhar tried to plea to the court directly, to which he only got a reprimand and was directed to mediate his counsel. Not only his request was denied, he was also told to sit down.
Justice Khawaja noted that the charges in the case maintained that the journalists were told that Dr Iftikhar had taken money from Bahria Town chief to affect the judiciary. He also directed the Attorney General Irfan Qadir and
Iftikhar’s counsel, Sardar Ishaq to explain the nature of the crime in the court.
Responding to Justice Khawaja, Ishaq said that the crime was not significant, and perhaps that was the reason that it was being concealed.
Earlier, following the media reports that Dr Iftikhar had received around Rs 300 to 400 million from the real estate tycoon Malik Riaz to affect the judicial proceedings, a suo motu was taken against Iftikhar and Riaz.
