Chief Justice is not responsible for his son’s acts; says Aitzaz Ahsan
Monday, June 11th, 2012 1:37:57 by Faisal FarooqSenator Aitzaz Ahsan of Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) said that it would not be the fault of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry if his son, Arsalan Iftikhar, would prove guilty of financial corruption.
Ahsan, the former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), confirmed the reports that he had seen documentary evidences against Arsalan Iftikhar.
He said he was saddened after seeing evidences, dispelling media reports about he cried and wept. He observed, “I only cried over the deaths of his mother and Benazir Bhutto”.
He, however, refused to comment over the material he witnessed against Arsalan Iftikhar saying it would be premature to discuss the sub-judice matter.
He said the chief justice should not have been on the bench hearing the case pertaining to allegations against his son in the light of the constitution and law of the land. He was of the opinion that Arsalan had right to defend himself against allegations.
He also denied having a twitter account, saying he even does not know how a message is posted on the social networking website.
Several accounts with his photograph are being run on the internet, he added. He noted that he would inform everyone whenever he joins twitter or any other social network website.
Earlier in the week, information was leaked to certain media outlets claiming that the chief justice’s son, Dr Arsalan Iftikhar, received millions of rupees and foreign trips as bribe from Malik Riaz in return for pledges to settle all pending cases related to Behria Town.
As the news spread on national media, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry took a suo motu notice, and summoned his son and Malik Riaz to the apex court. Although Arsalan Chaudhry denied many of the allegations, he confessed to some of them saying that this was his personal business dealing.
After preliminary hearing on Thursday, the chief justice detached himself from the bench and the remaining two members continued the hearings.
